Obituary For Elizabeth "Liz" Ann Hoffbeck

Mass of the Christian Burial for Liz Hoffbeck will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at St Patrick Catholic Church. Burial will be in Violet Hill Cemetery. A private family visitation will take place at Murdock Funeral Home. Masks must be worn and social distancing must be observed. Elizabeth Ann Swift was born October 20, 1958 in Des Moines, IA, the daughter of Joseph LeRoy and Judith Catherine (Crawford) Swift, and passed away Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. Liz grew up in Des Moines until moving with her family to Perry in 1975. She graduated from Perry High School in 1977. She married the love of her life, Jared James Hoffbeck in Perry at St Patrick Catholic Church on January 3, 2009. Liz worked as an Administrative Assistant for the Department of Human Services for 35 years where she helped countless people and made many friends. Liz had an infectious laugh and a smile that brightened everyone’s day. She loved the simple, yet most important parts of life. She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren, sitting outside with Jared drinking a cocktail, having her special dog, Hank on her lap, spending time with her sons and daughter-in laws, and taking countless trips with her sisters and brother. Clear Lake was a special place to her. Liz loved deeply and her family was everything to her. She ended every conversation with “I love you more.” She didn’t just say it, she showed it every day. We will miss her goofiness, laugh, and love. Survivors include her husband, Jared Hoffbeck; sons, Andy (Mary) Carlson, Adam (Nicole) Carlson; grandchildren Landon, Sophia, Leyton, Asher, Aidan, Addison, Evan, Hailey, and Olivia; mother, Judy Swift; brother, Dan (Erin) Swift; sisters, Becky Walton, Jennifer (David) Smith, Nancy Hager, Mary Pat King, Kate (Rich) Bedont, Chris (Ken) Rush, Sandy Juergens; nine grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Preceding Liz in death was her father, Roy, a brother David Swift, and a nephew Sam Juergens. Memorials in Liz’s name will be directed to cancer research and may be sent to Murdock Funeral Home. What a shock to find your obituary today. Liz and I worked together at Woodward State Hospital forty one years ago. You are pretty much unforgettable Liz. I remember your smile and laughter, your quick wit, and your excellent work ethic. I always hoped you'd find the love you deserved. I'm so sorry our paths never crossed again, though I wondered about you through the years. My sincere condolences to your family.

I had the pleasure of hiring Liz as my personal secretary at Polk County DHS. She was not only a pleasure to work with but someone whose honesty and trust I never needed to question. I have to believe she projected those qualities elsewhere. At any rate those qualities are rare enough and on top of that Liz was just an interesting character such as with her sometimes unedited interactions. I regret her passing and as with others who provide value to the rest of us she will be missed. My condolences to her family.

Liz was a great friend to me when I started working at Woodward and then in Des Moines for DHS. We talked everyday at work. She was a hard worker and always made the job a lot of fun when it wasn't. She was an important part of every day. I will miss her dearly. She was a true friend.
